The Moyle Cup jamboree event moved for the first time to Plymouth this year at the invitation of Tony Tatam, Plymouth having won the trophy in 2025 at Newton Abbot. Seven teams took part with Plymouth being given dispensation to enter a third team given the ample available space and the demand for places in the Plymouth teams from their members - a good sign! Pairings between members of the same club were kept to a minimum, three between Plymouth players and one between Newton Abbot's. Two rounds at a rate of 80+10 were completed shortly after 5.30 p.m.
Everyone present very much enjoyed the day with copious light refreshments on hand all through and a friendly atmosphere prevailing. These new-style Devon team competitions do much to enhance friendship across the whole Devon chess community and it is to be hoped that more clubs will enter as word goes round that this format really works. One of the most notable features of the day was the performance of a number of Devon's up-and-coming junior players including three delightful girls in the Plymouth teams.
Thanks are due to Tony Tatam and officers of Plymouth Chess Club for their hospitality and warm welcome.
The Association moves on in February to the annual Team Quickplay in Clyst St Mary Village Hall (15th Feb 2026 – details have been circulated) and in March to Barnstaple (Alverdiscott Village Hall) for the Schofield Cup (15th March 2026, rating limit u6850).
